Many neoconservatives are inspired by the political philospher Leo Strauss (September 20, 1899 – October 18, 1973). His views were complex and are little known in wider circles but involved a fear that democracy was inherently weak and undesirable and that the masses should be motivated by "heroic myths" from its politicians (effectively lying) in order to manipulate them to support their government.
