The '''Thirty Years' War''' began as a religious conflict in [[Germany]] between [[Bohemian]] [[Protestants]] and [[Hapsburg]] [[Catholics]] in 1618. The last of a series of wars between Catholics and Protestants since the beginning of the [[Reformation]] in 1517, the Thirty Years' War was one of the bloodiest wars in European history at that time. Although many soldiers died, the majority of those killed were civilians. Protestant armies attacked unarmed Catholic areas and Catholic armies attacked unarmed Protestant areas, intending to kill as many members of the opposing belief, whether they be men, women, or children, as possible. As a result of these destroyed areas, the soldiers lost to battle, the destruction of the German economy, and the prevalence of disease the war ushered in, the population of Germany decreased as much as 20%.
