The '''Yangtse''' (Chinese: ''Chiangjiang'', 'Long River'), is a Chinese river and, at 3,965 miles (6,380 km) in length, is the longest river in [[Asia]]. It rises on the [[Qinghai]] plateau and flows southwards, north-eastwards, then eastwards through [[Sichuan]], [[Hubei]], [[Anhui]] and [[[[Jiangsu]] provinces, entering the [[East China Sea]] (''Donghai'') near [[Shanghai]]. The major cities of [[Chongqing]], [[Wuhan]] and [[Nanjing]] lie on the banks of the Yangtse. The construction of a major [[hydro-electric power]] scheme on the middle reaches of the river has caused protests by environmentalists in China and abroad.
