Duke unsuccessfully ran for the Senate in the open primary in 1990 against J. Bennett Johnston. Most Republicans the Democratic incumbent due to Duke's racist views.  After [[Bob Livingston]] resigned from the House of Representatives in 1998, Republicans worried that Duke would run and win the open primary for Louisiana's 1st Congressional District. However, he did not run and [[David Vitter]] was elected instead.
