He was convicted in 2006 on charges of bribery, conspiracy and mail fraud[1] by a federal court jury under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. He was sentenced to 88 months in federal prison, fined and ordered to pay restitution, and currently is imprisoned after Judge Mark Fuller refused to release him on bond while awaiting appeal. Prosecutors had recommended Siegelman be sentenced to 30 years in prison, and a $25 million fine. In making this recommendation, they asked Judge Fuller to base his sentencing on the 25 charges of which Siegelman was acquitted, in addition to the seven charges the jury found him guilty of.[2] The jury rejected a total of 70 racketeering charges[3], out of more than 100 brought against Siegelman[4].
