The intrepidity of the 21 men and women in suffering the horrid death was truly astonishing; some thrust their hands and feet into the flames with most dauntless fortitude; and all of them yielded to their fate with such resolution that many of the amazed spectators lamented that such heroic souls had not been more enlightened.<ref>The account of William Lithgow, quoted in '''Scott, George Ryley''' ''The History of Torture Throughout the Ages'', London: Torchstream Books (1949)</ref></div>

==Causes of the Spanish Inqusition==
 +
The Spanish Inquisition has long been stigmatized as an atrocity that was allowed to be brought about because of religous zeal and a lack of seperation between the church and state, as if it is religion that is the cause of religious persecution.  What is often be noted, is that a lesser known inquisition had taken place in Sicily, which at the time belonged to the Kingdom of Aragon. King Ferdinand, who was the King of Aragon, would latter influence his wife Isabella of Castille and together they began the inquisition in Spain. This would have been of little consequence had Isabella not been queen of Castille, which was the biggest country on the Iberian Penisula. Isabella was only queen because the King of Castille before, King Enrique, produced a suitable heir. King Enrique was in fact known as El Impotente. King Enrique was not, however, impotent. King Enrique was in fact homosexual. Thus the case can be made that it was homosexuality, not religon, that can be blamed for the persecution of a people just because of their way of life.
