After Brooks graduated from [[Ohio State University]], he worked as managing editor of  [[Ohio]] newspaper, the ''Scripps-Howard''. In 1932, he moved to [[Washington, D.C.]] to become the newspaper chains political correspondent. Brooks began to work for [[NBC]] in 1953, when he served as moderator of the networks radio broadcast, ''Three Star Extra''<ref>Meet the Press: 50-Years of History in the Making, by Rick Ball (Author), pg. 24</ref>.  Before taking the position of moderator of''Meet the Press'', he frequently appeared as a panelist. In 1965, he was forced to retire from broadcasting because of illness. Brooks died at the age of sixty-seven in 1969.
