Most Americans believe that God created the different species of plants and animals in six days of Creation (Genesis chapter 1). Religious faith on this is divided into [[Young Earth Creationism]] (the process started less than 10,000 years ago and took a short time) and [[Old Earth Creationism]] (the process began hundreds of millions of years ago and took millions of years).

[[Linnaeus]] originally intended "species" to refer to the biblical creation "[[baramin|kinds]]", but the modern definitions of species do not match the biblical kinds.

Nevertheless, many Christians and many evolutionists believe that the idea of new species developing is inconsistent with the Bible.

However, creationary scientists accept that speciation has been observed, although they deny that speciation can lead to the development of completely new features as predicted by evolutionists.
