'''Transnistria''' , the ''Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic'' (PMR), (also known as Transdnistria) is a slef-proclaimed independent republic occupying the territory of [[Moldova]] east of the River Dnister. The 'republic' takes the form of a long and narrow strip of land (over 250 miles in length) sandwiched between the rest of [[Moldova]] and [[Ukraine]]. It has an area of 1,607 square miles (4,163 sq km) and a population of 555,000 (2005 est). The capital city is [[Tiraspol]]. Transnistria declared its independence of Moldova in 1990 and was able to secure separation thanks to the presence on its territory of the Soviet 14th Army.
