He was originally arrested in 2002 after traveling to the middle east and was quickly declared an [[enemy combatant]] and transferred to the [[Guantanamo Bay]] terrorist detention facility. The [[ACLU]] and other [[liberal]] groups attempted to have Padilla released <ref>http://www.nyclu.org/padilla_amicus_pr_061405.html</ref> on the grounds that he was a United States citizen, ignoring the fact that he conspired with America's enemies to kill American citizens.
