In 1252 the way was opened for the spanish inqusition when pope Innocent IV authorized torture as a means of getting information confessions from accused heretics.
The above was a rather sick though unfortunately typical method of torture/execution used in the spanish inquisition. The victim was placed in the iron collar and the screw was driven through his neck.
