[[Adolf Hitler|Hitler]], [[Napoleon Bonaparte|Napoleon]] and many other famous military geniuses have tried to conquer it during the winter but all failed. This phenomenon is known as [[General Winter]]. Germany in [[World War I]] did declare peace with Russia in a treaty favorable to the Germans (often considered to be humiliating to Russia) at the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, but did not actually conquer the country.
