Born Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyons, daughter of the [[Earl of Strathmore]], 4 August 1900. She married the Duke of York, second son of [[King George V]], and gave birth to two daughters, Elizabeth (now [[Queen Elizabeth II]]) in 1926, and [[Margaret Rose]] in 1930. She stiffened her husbands resolve during the [[1936 Abdication Crisis]] when the playboy [[King Edward VIII]] was inamorated of the twice-married American divorcee Mrs [[Wallis Simpson]], and the Duke of York became [[King George VI]]. As Queen, she cheered up Cockneys by visiting the east end of London during the [[Blitz]], even when [[Buckingham Palace]] was bombed. After George VI died of [[lung cancer]] in 1952 she became Queen Mother and is happily known to generations as the Queen Mum. It is common practice to say God Bless Her when she is mentioned. She helped the Queen through various crises and also enjoyed horse racing and fishing. The Queen Mum died in 2002 aged 101.
