'''Jiang Jingguo''' (Chiang Ching-kuo) (1910-1988) was the son of [[Jiang Jieshi]] (Chiang Kai-shek) and served as President of the [[Republic of China]] between 1978 and his death. During his presidency he gradually dismantled some of the autocratic contols previously maintained by the [[Guomindang]] government; in 1987 he abolished martial law and permitted visits from [[Taiwan]] to the Coimmunist-controlled Chinese mainland. He was succeeded in office by Li Denghui (Lee Teng-hui).
