The Solid South is a term describing the voting practices of the southern [[United States]] from the [[Reconstruction]] until the later 20th century, when the region voted solidly with the [[Democractic Party]]. More recently, the South has aligned itself more with the [[conservative]] [[Republican Party]], and, especially since the time of [[Richard Nixon]], the Solid South has reversed itself, becoming a bastion for Republicans. In 1980, [[Jimmy Carter]] only carried one southern state: his home state of Georgia, and since then southerner [[Bill Clinton]] is the only Democratic Presidential candidate to carry any state in the south.
