: In further response, first in a general way, I do not subscribe to the view that more abstraction is better. Unfortunately, many of today's top college math progams graduate studens who haven't a clue about [[number theory]], unsolved problems, or issues in math that were controversial only a few decades ago. Proof by contradiction was disfavored, for obvious reasons, by many mathematicians as recently as 30 years ago. That you're completely unaware of it merely underscores the need for this course. It's healthy to step back and evaluate a field from a critical perspective. This is not by any means yield to popular opinion. Quite the contrary, it is to inject a degree of accountability .
