The '''Atomic Energy Commission''' was a federal [[United States]] civilian agency in charge of overseeing the research, development, production, and use of [[nuclear energy]] and [[nuclear weapon]]s.
Established by President [[Harry Truman]] in 1946, the agency was headed by a five member board of commissioners, with one board member acting as chairman. The role of the AEC is now being performed by two separate agencies, the [[Nuclear Regulatory Commission]] and the United States [[Department of Energy]].
