'''Bermuda''' is an [[archipelago]] of 100 islands and islets (of which 20 are inhabited) in the North [[Atlantic Ocean]] 570 miles east of [[Cape Hatteras]] in the [[United States]]. Bermuda is an Overseas Territory of the [[United Kingdom]] with an area of 20 square miles (53 sq km) and a population of 64,000. The capital is Hamilton.
The territory was colonised in 1609 by Sir George Somers who was shipwrecked there en route for [[Virginia]]. It was named after a Spanish seafarer Juan Bermudez, swho sighted it (but did not land) in the early sixteenth century.
The territory acquired internal self government in 1968; a referendum of 1995 rejected independence.
