Following major defeats at the outbreak of war in August of 1914 in which German forces threatened Paris, the French managed to push back the German advance at the Battle of the Marne. Alongside Britain, they fought the war to a standstill that lasted years. In 1917 the USA joined the war, and in November, 1918, the combined forces of France, Britain, and The USA defeated germany and its allies.
