Here's another contrasting idiom, epipheral, ephemeral, and etherial -- what is comprehensible to the naked eye within the horizon, what is known of only momentary significance (which carries a rather sexist idea that it is 'feminine'), and what is known but not visible or something over the horizon. In a later sense and Latinized sense, etherial also becomes something "up in the air," for example, Christ will return in the ether.
