It appears it is likely that the Haeckel fraud was exposed to the general public by the New York Times in 2000 vis a vis Michael Behe. It also appears as if Stephen Jay Gould was not happy Gould did this.  However, I do know also that [[Jonathan Wells]] exposed the fraud to the public with his publication of the book Icons of Evolution in 2000.  Please see: http://www.discovery.org/articleFiles/PDFs/survivalOfTheFakest.pdf  It appears though the scientists knew it earlier:
