Historically, a Goth was a member of a [[Germanic]] tribe, which invaded the [[Roman Empire]] from the east between the third and fifth centuries AD. The eastern half of the tribe, the [[Ostrogoths]] eventually founded the [[kingdom]] of [[Italy]], while the [[Visigoths]], their western cousins, founded the kingdom of [[Spain]].  The Gothic language belonged to the so-called East Germanic languages and showed earlier features than West Germanic languages (like Old English and Old High German).  Our only knowledge of it is from the translation of the Bible by Ulfilas into Gothic, part of which survives as the 'Codex Argenteus' in Uppsala, Sweden.
