First of all you didn't include the entire passage.  Secondly, the context of the passage was from a review of Carl Sagan's book "The Demon Haunted World".  The review was a fairly broad discussion of the problems involved in getting people to understand science.  Mr. Lewontin is a fairly outspoken critic of the science establishment of which he is a part but that doesn't mean he disagrees with its methods or conclusions.  Unfortunately, creationist like to twist misquote prominent scientist to make it look like they are in there camp or "spilling the beans" on the evil, atheistic world view of scientist.
