:::::::Philip, not everything the pope say is infallible. The pope is only infallible if he makes a statement "ex cathedra" which means in his role as head of the catholic church on behalf of the catholic church. So if a pope writes a letter to a scientist, he is not infallible. Neither was the Regensburgspeech by Ratzinger infallible, because he spoke the academic Ratzinger, and not as pope of the catholic church. Infallability only applies to very special occasions.

:::::::Andy, not sure what qualifies as hearsay here, but I gave you a source [http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/conlaw/vaticanview.html]. If you want another source, here is an encyclical by pope Piux XII [http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/pius_xii/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-xii_enc_12081950_humani-generis_en.html]. And these are "ex cathedra", this means they are covered by the claim of infallibility. And the encyclical says that Catholics are free to form an opinion on evolution, as long as it assumes a single Adam, and as long as they do accept that souls are god given. :::::::: Andy, that Peter was the first Pope is a doctrine of Catholics, and I'm not Catholic, but that's not relevant to the discussion here, as we are talking about a Pope ''endorsing'' evolution or long ages, which Peter doesn't do anyway.

:::::::: Order, thanks for the clarification on speaking infallibly (supposedly; I don't agree with it myself).  I couldn't remember what the term was, let alone just when it applied.
