In 1546, the Spanish found great [[silver]] deposits in the state. Soon thousands of silver mines were operating, and the area became heavily populated and a major producer of silver. Zacatecas is still one of Mexico's largest producers of [[minerals]], primarily silver, [[gold]], mercury, [[copper]], [[iron]], and [[zinc]]. The city is known for it's cathedral, located in the center of the city, built between 1730 and 1760.
