What they fail to mention, however, is that the term "Catholic" was aptly applied to the church before they decided that every Joe Schmoe was allowed to interpret the Bible for himself, and broke away from the Roman Catholic Church. Conversely, many Roman Catholics dislike the adjective "Roman" because it implies, contrary to (Roman) Catholic doctrine, that their church is not ''the'' universal Church of Christ.
