Later the clergy openly stated its support for the White Revolution (contra revolution) causing further deaths both of the reds and the whites. Lenin thus proclaimed that a communist regime cannot remain neutral on the question of religion but must show itself to be merciless towards it. There was no place for the church in Lenin's classless society. This led to the declaration of the separation of church and state in the Soviet constitution, giving its citizens the "right" not to be fed with religious and anti-religious propaganda.
