Two actors, Moe Howard and Larry Fine, were in all versions of the Stooges features.  Shemp Howard (Moe's younger brother) appeared with Moe and Larry in 3 features as sidekicks to Ted Healey.  In 1934, Shemp left to work on his own, and a third Howard brother, Curly Howard, joined Moe and Larry and they began to do short features on their own as the "Three Stooges".

In 1947, Curly suffered a stroke (he would die in 1949), and Shemp rejoined Larry and Moe until his own death in 1955.  Joe Besser was the "third Stooge" for 2 features, and Curly Joe DeRita filled that role through the 60's.
