The '''Hazel''' is a member of the [[birch]] family of [[tree]]s, ''Betulaceae'', and can grow to a height of 30 feet. Typically it has a number of shoots or trunks branching out at ground level, which has led to some people referring to it as a bush as it doesn't meet the strict definition for a tree of having a single stem unbranched near the ground. This ability to produce multiple stems gives it a dense, spreading appearance and has led to it being used extensively for [[coppicing]]. Usually living for between 50and 70 years, if it is coppiced it will live much longer, up to several hundred years.
