The area was formerly noted for coal mining and shipbuilding. Mining ended in the late twentieth century, and the shipbuilding industry has been reduced to a small amount of ship repair and conversion work. The area of North Tyneside that faces the [[North Sea]] includes the small coastal resorts of [[Tynemouth]] and [[Whitley Bay]]. Tynemouth has, on the headland overlooking the river mouth, a combined medieval castle and priory, both in ruins.
