Considering the zero-tolerance approach of U.S. neoconservatives to Islamic terrorists, and their insistence that the U.S. must be free to combat terrrism worldwide, then surely Russia is entitled to deal with terrorism on it's own terrority? Chechnya is recognised as part of Russia by all law-abiding countries. As a matter of fact, only the Taliban recognised the separatist government of Chechnya and provided funds, weapons, and training to the Chechens. Chechens fought on behalf of Bin Laden in Afganistan in 2001. Why is this not commented on.? The Chechens have a vicious record of anti-Christian violence[http://www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/persec-chechnya1.html] yet this does not seem to worry U.S. neoconservatives. It has never been proved that any Chechens fought on behalf of Bin Laden in Afganistan in 2001. There were some people from the former Soviet Union, but it hasn't been proved they were Chechens. Chechen nationalists were usually pro-Western. Late Chechen president Aslan Maskhadov supported American activities in Iraq [http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/878969/posts].
It is true that there are also Islamic fundamentalists in Chechnya, but this is more tactical approach than genuine support to fundamentalism.
I think that in the article it should be mentioned that there are now 3 centers presenting themselves as Chechen government:
1) puppet regime (Khadyrov) - already mentioned.
2) The government and parliament of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria (on emigration) with the ChRI Parliamentary Chairman Zh.Saralyapov and the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the ChRI Ahmad Zakayev - they are the successors of legally elected president Maskhadov so they can be regarded as lawful Chechen government
3) Self-proclaimed Emir of the Khalifat - Dokka (Doku) Umarov - former president of the Chechen Republic Ichkeria who abandoned this function.
As for Islamic fundamentalism, one should remember that Russia co-operated with Saddam's Iraq and now is making business with Iran.
