He travelled to Europe, where he met several of the leading Christian thinkers, before returning to Scotland to preach. The [[Roman Catholic]] Archbishop James Beaton's kangaroo court tried him for [[heresy]]. He was then murdered by Roman Catholics by being burnt at the stake in St Andrews. He is commemmorated there as a martyr of the [[faith]] on the [[Martyrs' Monument]].
