The '''Union for a Popular Movement''' is [[France]]'s largest [[conservative]] political party. It was initially aligned with the policies of [[Jacques Chirac]], but has increasingly differed with him, especially when it officially expressed opposition to [[Turkey]]'s membership in the [[European Union]] after Chirac supported it. It nominated [[Nicolas Sarkozy]] (who is also the president of the party) for [[2007 French presidential elections|President in 2007]]. This nomination was talked about, because of the absence of another opponent.

In 2007 the UMP nominated [[Nicolas Sarkozy]] (who is also the president of the party) for [[2007 French presidential elections|president]]. Sarkozy won the presidency in the second round of voting on May 6, 2007.

 

The party also holds a majority in both houses of the French [[Parliament]], with [[François Fillon]] serving as [[Prime Minister]].
