The club was founded in 1908 and started playing in the top [[Sydney]] competition in that year. South Sydney is noted for being the least successful club in the History of the Australian Rugby League competition. Ever since their entry into the competition in 1908 south Sydney has failed to win a premiership and holds the record for the most wooden spoons (42) (a colloquial term used in Australia used to describe the team who comes last in the competition) as well as the record for the most consecutive wooden spoons (18, between 1954-1973). The also have the rare distinction as being the only team in the National Rugby League competition to never make a finals series. The closest time South Sydney ever came to winning to Rugby League premiership was in 1983 when the managed to come 7th out of 12 teams placing them two positions out of the finals series. |
