The Code of Hammurabi was an elaborate code of law established by [[Hammurabi]] before 1750 BC.  It was the first unified code of law.  The Code imposed harsh punishment of "an eye for an eye", and lower classes were punished more severely than higher classes.  It mandated death for the person who bore false witness in court.  The Code of Hammurabi was used for many hundred years.
