Joining the military upon completion of high school, he rose through the ranks, and was eventually appointed to positions under the rule of [[Anwar Sadat]]. Mubarak became one of Sadat's closest advisers, and was appointed vice-president in 1975. Mubarak became President on October 13, 1981, one week after Sadat was assassinated by [[Muslim]] [[terrorists]], and has held the position since then.
President Mubarak is married to Mrs. Suzanne Thabet and they have two sons, Alaa and Gamal, as well as two grandsons.
