:Not only did he self-identify as Irish ("I'm Irish not English! Did you ever know an Irishman who didn't puff and blow?" - [http://www.cslewisinireland.com/CSlewisweb.swf C. S. Lewis(1958)]) note also that his nationality exempted him from conscription. This is mentioned also with regard to his brother ([http://www.hedweb.com/bgcharlton/warren-lewis.html Warren Lewis was a volunteer (he was Irish by nationality, hence not subject to conscription)]).
