As with many traditional songs, nobody knows who actually composed them in the first place, or when they were composed. As with most folk music, everybody who sings them makes a contribution - for each singer will make, either by accident or design, some tiny variation to the words and/or melody. A folk song therefore becomes the musical expression of a culture or community.
