This book begins the story and introduces [[Bilbo Baggins]], who is a hobbit living in [[Hobitton]]. It is Bilbo's eleventy-first, or 111, birthday. At the party, Bilbo gives a speech to the hobbits and, after saying goodbye, uses the ring to dissapear, to the astonishment of all the hobbits. Bilbo goes back up to his house and gathers the things he will be taking on his journey he had been planning. Gandalf intercepts Bilbo at Bag End and asks him if he is leaving the ring as well as all of the property to [[Frodo Baggins|Frodo]], his nephew. Bilbo assures him that he is and places it in and envelope with some reluctance.   It also shows the beginning formation of the [[Fellowship of the Ring]] (hence the title.)  It shows Frodo's journeys with [[Sam]], [[Pippin]] and [[Merry]], all hobbits, from the shire to Rivendell while pursued by the mysterious otherworldly [[Nazgul|Black Riders]].
