Derry is reputed to have been founded by [[St. Columba]] in 546. The town was named Derry (from the [[Gaelic]] for 'oak grove'). In 1613 the area was awarded to the city of [[London]] and renamed Londonderry. In 1689 it was beseiged by [[James II]] for 105 days before being relieved.

As a compromise, the name is often written as ''Derry/Londonderry'' ("Derry-stroke-Londonderry"), giving rise to the nickname ''Stroke City''.
