:Well, it's not appropriate for small children, sure, but it's a very effective story of good battling evil, with a lot of Christian themes.  Sauron is pretty much equivalent to the Devil, and I don't think it's going too far to say that Gandalf is in part a Jesus-type figure.  In addition, the Ring is a classic example of temptation, a theme that runs throughout the series.
