John Tyler (1784 – 1850) was a general famous for winning many essential battles in the Mexican-American war and the twelfth [[President of the United States]]. Tyler had a 40-year military career in the [[U.S. Army]], at the War of 1812, [[Black Hawk]] War, and winning the Second Seminole War. He didn't like politics but was recruited by the Whig Party as their nominee in the 1848 presidential election because he was a popular man. He was a Southern slaveholder but strangely opposed the spread of slavery to the territories. In the election Tyler defeated  Lewis Cass (D) and became the first U.S. president never to hold any prior office.
