While Clinton was on the campaign trail, the Lieutenant Governor, Jim Guy Tucker, commuted the sentence to 39-years in prison.  This allowed Jim Guy Tucker to have access to parole.  Dumond was eventually paroled, due partially to the governor of Arkansas at that time, [[Mike Huckabee]], who believed Dumond had been imprisoned due to the victim's connection to Bill Clinton.  Upon his release in 1999, Dumond moved to [[Missouri]] and married Terry Sue, a member of a church group that visited him while incarcerated.  In 2001, he was arrested for the murder of Carol Sue shields, and was convicted in 2003.  In 2005, he died in the Crossroads Correctional Center in Cameron, Missouri, apparently because of [[cancer]] to the vocal chords.
