'''Lewis''' (Gaelic: ''Leodhas''), or the Isle of Lewis (''Eilan Leodhas''), occupies the northern, major part of the largest island of the [[Western Isles]] (''Na h-Eileanan Siar'') of [[Scotland]]. Despite its name, it is not an island in itself, but is bounded by [[Harris]]. The land is flat and relatively fertile, much being divided into crofts (smallholdings). The main town, [[Stornoway]] (''Steornabhagh''), is also the administrative centre of the Western Isles. The megalithic standing stones at Callanish on Lewis are one of Scotland's major cultural monuments.
