Cthulhu (pronounced "Khlûl'hloo" or "Kathooloo") (Other spellings: Kutulu, Ktulu, Cthulu, Kthulhut, Thu Thu, Tulu) is a fictional Pre-Judeo-Christian deity/demon variously described as a "sleeping" or "dreaming" in the works of [[H.P. Lovecraft]]. Cthulhu sleeps in the sunken city of R'lyeh and when the stars are right, will reawaken ushering in the destruction of humanity.

As of 2005 some correlation has been proposed (1) between the symbology of the mythos and both the Christian devil [[Satan]] and [[creation science]] in Christianity: in the stories the being Cthulhu corrupts creatures from God and turns their worship inward, on their own bodies, with horrific results (2); furthermore, many of the tales in the mythos feature the triumph of the supernatural over established science (3). It should be recognized, however, that Lovecraft was an avowed athiest and that the symbology is likely coincidental.
