Dewey defeats Truman is one of the more amusing moments in the history of United States presidential elections.
In 1948, the election was between Harry Truman and Thomas Dewey, the Democratic Party was going through many internal splits, and it was believed that Truman had no chance.
The Wednesday, November 3, 1948 edition of the Chicago Tribune was emblazoned with "Dewey defeats Truman" on it's front page. (This was the belief in the office of the Tribune based on early returns, it also was of no help that it's writers were on strike).
Truman was given a copy, (most of them had been withdrawn) and posed for a photo with it smiling.
2004 Edition
On Tuesday, July 6 2004, history seemed to repeat itself when the New York Post reported on it's front page that Senator John Kerry had chosen former House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt to be his running-mate in the 2004 election. While in reality that very day Kerry announced then Senator John Edwards as his running mate.
