The society in 1984 didn't have religion, not even the proles, as Winston notes:''For that matter, even religious worship would have been permitted if the proles had shown any sign of needing or wanting it.''

Plus two other mentions in Part 3. For me, the scariest thing about Big Brother is controlling the past, "he who controls the past controls the future", I don't think any religion or group has ever been even remotely successful. Thank God.
