Brigham Young (June 1, 1801 - August 29, 1877) was not the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints, as is often incorrectly cited. He was the second prophet and the president.
After Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS Church, was killed in 1844 by a lynch mob while awaiting trial for chages of treason, Mr. Young was appointed the faith's new leader.
Young led a group from Nauvoo to Salt Lake City, where he established what the LDS church calls New Zion. While in Salt Lake Brigham Young started a church (Brigham Young University) and a clothing store (ZCMI-Zion Cooperative Mercantile Exchange). ZCMI was later purchased by Meyer & Frank, and in 2006 was purchased by Macy's. Prior to the sale, ZCMI was solely owned an operated by the LDS church.
