'''Stockton on Tees''' is an industrial town in [[County Durham]], north-east [[England]], located on the [[River Tees]]. It achieved renown as being the first terminus of the [[Stockton and Darlington Railway]], the world's first public railway to employ steam locomotives; and is also famous for its High Street, which, doubling as a market place, is the widest in England. [[Harold Macmillan]] was [[MP]] for Stockton in the 1930s and his experiences in the depression-hit town helped to mould his centrist brand of Conservatism. When he was enobled, he chose to take the title Viscount Stockton.
