On June 19, 1942 she married Jimmy Dougherty. On August 26, 1946 she signed her first studio contract with Twentieth Century Fox. Her performance in 1953's ''Niagara'', delivered her to stardom. Photoplay magazine voted Monroe the Best New Actress of 1953. On January 14, 1954, she married [[baseball]] superstar [[Joe DiMaggio]]. For 1959's ''Some Like It Hot'', she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy. On June 29, 1956, Monroe wed playwright [[Arthur Miller]]. Her final public appearance was at Dodger Stadium for a benefit show.

She died in 1962 from an overdose of sleeping pills under very questionable circumstances.  Her death was a shock to the world.  [[Elton John]]'s song ''Candle in the Wind'' was about her.
